Notes from the 2007 Young Rider Camp:

Young Riders What can I say - despite the weather camp was a blast! 30 Young Riders from all over the area gathered at Inavale Farms in OR for four days of nothing but horses, friends and fun. The week started off with blistering heat on Tuesday as each camper enjoyed a private dressage lesson from one of our four instructors John Camlin, Bea DiGrazia, Tricia Dahms and Loris Henry.

Wed started in full swing with Bea giving much sought after lunge line lessons, John working the YRS very hard in the show jumping arena, Tricia taking groups out CC and Young Riders Loris taking her time in her dressage lessons. Everyone seemed to have a great time throughout the day despite the constant NW drizzle. By Wednesday evening I gave up trying to keep Loris on time and extended her dressage lessons to 45 minutes since she basically told me she would teach until she was done! Gotta love Loris- very passionate about her dressage and nothing was going to get in her way.

Thursday brought more lessons, a jog up presentation by our YRs preparing for the FEI competitions in Montana and CA complete with John’s critique, a wrapping demo by Bea and Loris’ version of Jeopardy. The night continued with a heated game of soccer while Cindy Covington set up her plasma screen TV in the tent and left it for the girls to watch Thrills and Spills and WEG 2006. Nothing like camping in luxury! And a NW camp would not be complete without evening sun to bring out two of the biggest rainbows I have ever seen!

Young RidersThe whole week was fun but not just games- the YRS spent 3 hours in the saddle every day working very hard on dressage, show jumping, or Cross country. I wish that I hadn’t gotten hurt and could have taken advantage of those wonderful instructors myself! Frankly I was a bit jealous as I spent the week helping the YRS with their stable management- wrapping, braiding, icing and whatever else was needed. Every horse and rider was content and more educated by the end of the week including Levi’s naughty pony who learned that he had two leads not just one!

I have to say that YR camp 2007 was one of the best camps so far. Looking forward to an even better week in 2008! If you have questions or comments about camp please feel free to contact Anni Grandia or Mary Leatherman. We would love to hear your thoughts! - Anni Grandia
