April Newsletter
Dear Area VII Members
Spring is a wonderful time to enjoy the flowers and wonderful weather here in the Pacific Northwest; hopefully you have time to stop and enjoy these things along your journey. I would like to make sure everyone updates their annual membership with the USEA for the 2010 competition season. I will be updating the mailing list for our newsletter in Flying Changes very soon. If you are waiting to renew till the last minute (like when sending in entries for an event), consider this your prod to make this the year you get your entries in before the closing date.
Speaking of entries – entries are already open for Northwest Equestrian Center’s Mother’s Day Gala for beginner novice through intermediate levels. Visit their website for entry status and information about this year’s event. The Turners have had amazing luck with good weather over the many years on Mother’s Day weekend and last year was no exception; unfortunately just prior to the event the weather did not help them in the lower ground. Hopefully this year will return back to the normal.
This month is the Adult Riders Event Derby and Spring Fling at NWEC on April 1-4th in Rainier Washington. This was announced last month in Maggie’s report and hopefully everyone interested was able to participate.
April 3rd and 4th – Our third annual Young Rider spring camp at Tulipsprings Farm in Kennewick - "on the dry side" of Washington! Young Riders will receive two lessons on Saturday and one lesson on Sunday. They will also host a BBQ for Young Riders and their families on Saturday.
April 6th is the opening date for the Happ’s Horse Trials with beginner novice through training levels of competition. This year has brought about many changes in their event with Denis Glaccum, of Pennsylvania, as their new Cross Country Course Designer. Visit their website (or the Area VII site) for a wonderful report from Fran O’ Reilly (2010 President of the ground jury) on her discussion and visit with Denis and what is in production for 2010. Organizers Maureen Harkcom and Ken Olsen have chosen another wonderful friend to eventers here in the Northwest for their 2010 Technical Delegate, Janis Linnan. With positive encouragement from competitors on these changes I expect Happ’s will continue with their plan to have Denis develop a preliminary level in the near future.
April 29th to May 2nd is the Adult Rider camp at Aspen Farm in Yelm, Washington. Camp instructors include: Steuart Pittman, Jonathon Elliott, Michele Morseth, Judy Klus, and Jean Moyer. Check out their flyers for instructor bios and camp details on the Area VII Adult Riders website.
If you have additional news you would like to share, don’t hesitate to shoot me an email.

Adult Rider Report.
It is exciting to think that when this goes to print we, in Area VII will be filling out our entries for the first events of the 2010 season. Remember that the year end awards are computed from your participation in team competition. So sign up where it is offered. If your whole team consists of AR members your get extra points.
This is not to be confused with the Year Long team competition organized and sponsored by John Meriwether. Please contact John for information on how to be part of the fun. Non members are welcome to participate. Should be great fun and a chance for really nice prizes at the end of the year.
Another way to earn a nice prize is to keep track of your results at Event Derbies. I want to do a High Point for those members that compete at the many wonderful Derbies in the area. This will also be a chance to reward some members that do not compete at the recognized events. Contact me for a form.

Young Rider Report
Thank you to all who have renewed their Young Rider membership through USEA. If you have not renewed yet please do so. We don’t want you to miss out on any of the exciting Young Rider activities.
We just finished a great Young Rider clinic at Aspen Farms. We had good weather and great dressage and jumping lessons with Jonathan Elliott and Jean Moyer.
The next Young Rider activity on the calendar is the spring clinic at Tulipsprings on April 3-4th. We will have two days of instruction in both dressage and jumping, a barbeque and special activities. Registration is due March 15th
We have several candidates for this year’s North American Young Rider Championships in Kentucky in June. Please root for our candidates as they go through the selection process.
Our camp dates are set for Aspen Farm on June 29th – July 2nd. Registration forms and information will be on the website by the first part of April. We hope you can make it to another great camp this year.
